Collaging! Charcoaling! Either one is good for the artistic soul!
When collaging I relish the hunt for materials with colors, patterns, and textures. Then I rejoice in the find. Collaging aligns with my passion for measuring and building as I tear, cut, glue and place.
My collaging process is a mechanical one of visualizing how pieces come together to create a whole image. Like an experiment, there is freedom to connect things that did not belong together a second ago, but do now. I rely on acrylic painted rice paper in solid colors or patterns of multiple colors. String, fabric and foil are also utilized. The acrylic collage painting process involves gluing down materials, then adding paint, then more collage materials. There is a synergy between paint and paper.
When charcoaling, I handle the charcoal with confidence. I have a passion for watching black, greys, and white appear on my paper with a flourish of energy to create a landscape, interior or a still life. I rely on many materials. Not only do I use charcoal pencil, but also white charcoal pencil, compressed charcoal, vine charcoal and white soft pastel.
In both collaging and charcoaling, my recent work has been focused on my interpretation of light on objects. This expresses my respect for how such a simple thing - light - defines and gives us knowledge about our entire world and how the absence of light with resulting shading and shadows gives us dimension.
Often knowing when I finish a collage or charcoal drawing can be a challenge. I know my materials are working together when I feel and hear a crescendo of music like that arising from a finely tuned orchestra. At that moment I know my creation is finished.
